News archive: 1999

Dec 1999
[28/12/99]   The 1999 Kurt Maschler Award was announced on 6 December. Me and my Cat? was shortlisted in October but unfortunately didn't win. This award is for a children’sbook that combines excellence in both text and illustration. Entries for the next award must have been published during 1999.

[23/12/99]   New book illustrated by Satoshi is to be published in 2000! Called Points of View with Professor Peekaboo, it is another collaboration with John Agard. It is to be published by The Bodley Head.
An update on the upcoming book, The Comic Adventures of Boots! The book was still at the rough sketch stage in late October with plans to add the text soon. It appears to be quite detailed and about 48 pages in length.
Satoshi informs us that he is not involved at all in the animated Sheeep series and that "the film has evolved of its own accord and...become somewhat different from the original book". It should be interesting to see how different when broadcast on the BBC next year.

[11/12/99]   This isn't fresh news since it was released in late September but Sheeep has been sold to the UK(BBC), Germany (ZDF) and Italy (Reteitalia). The series is to be aired in 26 half hour episodes.

Nov 1999
[23/11/99]   Bookstart is a UK programme run by Sainsbury's Bookstart and Book Trust, an independent book charity. What's this got to do with Satoshi? A Friend for Boots has been "selected by independent experts...as being an ideal book for babies". Providing free books, the programme has wonderful benefits like literacy and encouraging quality family time.

[05/11/99]  Visit the Andersen Press website as it's finally been finished. There's a page on South African Hiawyn Oram, who has collaborated with Satoshi many times.
If you're interested in some of Hiawyn's other work, she also has an animation series. Produced by King Rollo Films, the series is called Marvellous Milly. It should be be quite quirky and interesting. King Rollo Films is a project of David McKee, another Andersen Press author/artist who is well known for Elmer -the patchwork elephant.

Sep 1999
[16/10/99]   Satoshi Kitamura has a new book coming out in 2000! It's called The Comic Adventures of Boots which I assume features the same cat as in his previous books. Remember the board books in 1997?! The new book will retail for £9.99, its ISBN is: 0862648238. The release date is 31st December, 2000.
There's also a promotional pack called "X 16 BOOTS COUNTERPACK" - this retails for a whopping £47.84. The pack includes 8 copies each of the Boots board books, as well as some promotional stuff. The ISBN: 0862647851. For info, visit bookstore.co.uk. Thanks to both Trina and Scott for this info!

[15/10/99]   Update on Me and my Cat?. You get a signed copy of this new book from Random House website. It costs exactly the same (£9.99) as the unsigned one [that is, if you don't take into account the discount often offered by online booksellers]. If interested, visit the site - go to Advanced Search and look for new titles under the Andersen Press imprint.
All four Eureka books are now up on the booklist. These books were part of an exhibition at the Eureka! Museum in Halifax, England. If you're ever in the area, visit to pose with alarger-than-life little boy designed by Satoshi!

[04/10/99]   Me and my Cat? will be released in the UK in October. To ensure you have a copy, order it now! A quick synopsis of the plot:
"Late one night, an old lady in a pointed hat climbs through the window into Nicholas's bedroom. She brandishes her broom, fires out some words, and then leaves as abruptly as she came. It's puzzling at the time, but not nearly as puzzling as what happens the next day!"
