Reviews: Lily takes a Walk
This appeared in Strong Brains, which lists circa 500 books covering the essentials of an education in the sciences and arts.Lily Takes a Walk by Satoshi Kitamura. Children can constrast courage and fear, reality and fantasy as Lily and her dog Nicky walk home in the dark. Lily is rational, confident and self-reliant. Nicky is more than an little high-strung, seeing fantastic monsters in every shadow. We -- but not he -- know the difference.

Written and illustrated by Satoshi Kitamura. Lily likes to go for walks with her dog, Nicky. Lily sees delightful sights and has benign adventures as she strolls through an English-looking town. Nicky is plainly terrified, and everywhere he turns there is threat and menace. The dazzlingly talented illustrator of ''When Sheep Cannot Sleep'' here puts teeth in a mailbox, hides eyes in street lights and dinosaurs in ponds. Poor Nicky. The reader will probably laugh.
